Although many people are obese, others are just a little overweight. Their clothes don't fit as well as they should, and they don't feel as light on their feet as they used to. For the second group, a program designed to show them how to lose 10 pounds is ideal. There are many such plans, but not all of them are safe.

Health practitioners say that losing weight only to gain it again - called the see-saw effect - is not healthy. The only way to avoid this is to change the daily routine. Ten pounds - not a lot by dieters' standards - actually is a lot for your body to process, unless it's only 'water weight'. Think of ten cartons of butter spread over your hips, thighs, torso, and upper arms.

Your system has to work hard to gt rid of stored fat. Think of each pound as four sticks of butter spread over your body. Incorporating exercise into your dieting program helps your body break down and eliminate stored fats and toxins. This is better than just cutting calories, since physical activity improves circulation, tones muscles (which burn fat more efficiently than flab), and makes you breathe deeply and perspire, two important cleansing processes.

Since muscle tissue weighs more than fat, exercise alone may not achieve weight loss. Even when you notice your outline shrinking, your scale may not show much progress. However, exercising is great motivation to lose weight, and you'll feel and look better. Physical activity causes a release of the 'feel good' hormones in your body, which helps when you're looking at dietary changes and restrictions.

We all know that we should eat more fresh vegetables, and this sort of food is low in calories and fat. There are other benefits, too. Crunching on carrots and celery helps with the urge to snack and contributes valuable fiber to the diet. Some foods - according to researchers - actually take more calories to digest than they add. Oranges and grapefruit are supposed to be in this category.

Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day is also included in the best way to lose weight. As your body burns stored fats, toxins are released. Adequate water helps flush them out of your system. Water also curbs appetite, is calorie and fat-free, and keeps you from thinking thirst is hunger (which happens when a person is chronically dehydrated).

The best way to lose weight is to eliminate empty calorie foods, cut down on salt, eat fiber-rich (and appetite-suppressing) veggies, drink adequate water, and increase physical activity. Only those who have a serious problem with slimming down will need to weigh portions and keep food charts. These techniques can be helpful to all, however, since many people don't realize how much they eat.

Once the ten pounds are shed, it's a good idea to make these common-sense rules into habits. This will maintain your new, slimmer outline and improve your over-all health and vitality. You may find that you think more clearly, sleep more soundly, and have a better memory, too.
